Common Ports Quiz
Port numbers are easy marks on Security+ and Network+ — if you have them memorized. Drill the well-known ports two ways: a 10-question quiz with instant feedback and explanations, or flashcards you can flip through anywhere. Every mapping here is the standard IANA assignment the exams use.
How to use this for the exam
Learn the ports in families: the secure versions sit next to the plain ones (HTTP 80 / HTTPS 443, IMAP 143 / IMAPS 993, POP3 110 / POP3S 995, LDAP 389 / LDAPS 636), and the mail ports travel together (SMTP 25, submission 587). When a question stem mentions encrypted or TLS, reach for the secure port — that single habit answers a surprising number of exam questions.

Which ports should I memorize for Security+ and Network+?
Start with the core set: FTP 20/21, SSH 22, Telnet 23, SMTP 25, DNS 53, DHCP 67/68, HTTP 80, POP3 110, NTP 123, IMAP 143, SNMP 161/162, LDAP 389, HTTPS 443, SMB 445, RDP 3389 and the secure mail ports 587, 636, 993 and 995. This quiz covers all of them plus the database and authentication ports the exams also test.
What is the difference between ports 80 and 443?
Port 80 is plain HTTP with no encryption — logins and data cross the network in clear text. Port 443 is HTTPS: the same web traffic protected by TLS encryption, which is why exam questions that mention secure or encrypted web access always mean 443.
Why does DNS use both TCP and UDP port 53?
Everyday name lookups are small and fast, so DNS uses UDP 53. Zone transfers between DNS servers and responses too large for a single UDP packet use TCP 53 instead. Both protocols share port number 53.
How does the flashcard mode work?
Flashcards show a port number first; tap the card to flip it and see the service, protocol and a one-line fact. Shuffle the deck to randomize the order, and use the quiz mode when you want a scored test with explanations.
