CompTIA Certification Roadmap (2026)
CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral, beginner-friendly, and stackable by design — which is why the A+ → Network+ → Security+ "trifecta" has launched more IT careers than any other sequence. Here is the full roadmap for 2026, from your first cert to the expert level.

Before the A+: Tech+
If you are starting from absolute zero, CompTIA Tech+ is the pre-A+ foundation exam. It replaced the older ITF+ (IT Fundamentals) and covers basic IT concepts — hardware, software, security awareness, and troubleshooting logic — at a conceptual level. It is not required for the A+, but it is a gentle first win if terms like "operating system" and "IP address" are still new to you.
The Trifecta: A+ → Network+ → Security+
| Order | Certification | What it proves | Unlocks roles like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A+ (220-1201 / 220-1202) | Hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting, security basics | Help desk technician, desktop support, field service |
| 2 | Network+ (N10-009) | Networking concepts, implementation, operations, troubleshooting | Network administrator, NOC technician, junior network engineer |
| 3 | Security+ (SY0-701) | Threats, vulnerabilities, security architecture and operations | Security analyst, SOC analyst, security administrator |
The logic of the sequence is deliberate: the A+ teaches you how individual machines work, Network+ teaches you how machines talk to each other, and Security+ teaches you how to protect all of it. Each layer assumes the one beneath it, which is why skipping ahead usually backfires — Security+ expects you to already understand networking.
Beyond the Trifecta
CySA+ and PenTest+: the security career track
After Security+, the two intermediate security certs split by role. CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst) targets defensive work — threat detection, vulnerability management, and incident response. PenTest+ targets offensive work — penetration testing and vulnerability assessment. Choose based on whether you want to defend systems or break into them (legally).
SecurityX: the expert summit
SecurityX is CompTIA's expert-level security certification — the vendor-neutral answer to the most senior security credentials. It targets seasoned professionals architecting enterprise security programs.
The specialty certs: Cloud+, Linux+, Server+, Data+
CompTIA also offers focused certifications outside the main ladder: Cloud+ for cloud infrastructure, Linux+ for Linux administration, Server+ for server hardware and administration, and Data+ for data analytics fundamentals. These slot in wherever your career needs them — Cloud+ pairs naturally with Network+, and Linux+ is a quiet superpower for security analysts.
The Career Logic: How the Certs Stack
The classic progression: A+ gets you into the industry (help desk) → Network+ moves you into infrastructure (network admin) → Security+ pivots you into the highest-demand field (security analyst). Each cert is a rung, and employers recognize the pattern instantly.
- Help desk / desktop support: A+ is the expected credential. It is practically the job description in cert form.
- Network administrator: A+ + Network+. The combination proves you understand both endpoints and the network between them.
- Security analyst: the full trifecta. SOC hiring managers look for Security+ specifically, and they assume the networking foundation underneath it.
- Specialist roles: add CySA+ (defense), PenTest+ (offense), or Cloud+ (cloud) on top of the trifecta.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to take the A+ before Network+?
- CompTIA does not enforce an order, but the trifecta sequence is recommended for a reason — Network+ assumes comfort with the hardware and OS concepts the A+ teaches. Skipping the A+ is fine if you already have that foundation from work experience.
- What is Tech+, and do I need it?
- Tech+ is CompTIA's pre-A+ fundamentals exam (it replaced ITF+). You only need it if you are starting from zero and want a gentler first step before tackling the A+.
- Which cert gets me a help desk job?
- The A+. It is the industry-standard credential for help desk and desktop support roles, and it appears in more entry-level job postings than any other certification.
- Security+ vs. CySA+ — which one first?
- Security+ first, always. It is the entry point to security work and the prerequisite knowledge for CySA+, which goes deeper into analyst-level defensive operations.
- Are CompTIA certs enough on their own for a security career?
- The trifecta plus CySA+ is a strong vendor-neutral foundation that gets many analysts hired. Senior roles usually add vendor-specific depth (Cisco, cloud platforms) and, above all, hands-on experience.
